Experience the Northern Lights Without the Rush
At Arctic Verge, we believe that experiencing the Northern Lights should be about more than spending hours driving around in search of a clear sky.
Our Northern Lights Basecamp offers a different approach. Instead of chasing the aurora from one location to another, we welcome you to our own peaceful lakeside location beside Lake Munajärvi, surrounded by forests and the beautiful nature of Finnish Lapland.
Here, you can relax around an open fire inside our cosy teepee, enjoy a warm drink and take your time experiencing the Arctic night. Step outside whenever you like to admire the sky, listen to the silence and, with a little luck, watch the Northern Lights dancing above the lake.
Why We Choose a Different Approach
Tourism in Finnish Lapland has grown enormously over the years. While tourism brings many positive things to the region, the increasing number of visitors also puts pressure on the nature and local communities that make this place so special.
One thing we have noticed is the growing number of vehicles driving around the countryside every evening in search of the Northern Lights. These tours can involve hours of driving, sometimes covering long distances in an attempt to find clearer skies.
All this driving means additional fuel consumption, emissions and traffic on roads that were never designed for large numbers of tourist vehicles.
But the impact is not only environmental.
As more people search for places away from artificial light, quiet roadsides, private driveways and even people's gardens can become unofficial Northern Lights viewing spots. For local residents, this can mean unwanted traffic, noise, headlights and visitors gathering close to their homes.
We live in Lapland ourselves, and we believe that tourism should respect the people who call this place home.
We also believe that the beautiful nature of Lapland should not simply become a backdrop for mass tourism. It is something we should all take care of so future generations can enjoy it too.
Our Own Peaceful Location
That is one of the reasons we created our Northern Lights Basecamp.
Rather than relying on random roadside stops or searching for places to park every evening, we welcome our guests to a dedicated location on our own property beside Lake Munajärvi.
Our Basecamp is surrounded by nature, away from the busy tourist areas of Levi and with very little light pollution.
At the heart of the experience is our cosy teepee with an open fireplace, where you can warm up, enjoy a hot drink and spend time together in a relaxed atmosphere.
You can step outside whenever you like to admire the night sky or take photographs, without having to rush back into a vehicle to drive somewhere else.
Of course, we still need to transport our guests from Levi to our location. But by staying at one destination instead of driving around throughout the evening, we avoid unnecessary driving during the experience.
Small Groups, Less Disturbance
We deliberately keep our groups small, with a maximum of eight guests per experience.
We want our guests to feel welcome and comfortable, without the crowds and rush that can sometimes come with popular tourist activities.
By using our own location, we can also better manage where our guests go, keep disturbance to the surrounding environment to a minimum and avoid using places that were never intended for tourism.
For us, responsible tourism is not about making big promises. It is about making thoughtful choices in how we operate.
More Than Just Seeing the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. Even with the best forecasts, nobody can guarantee that they will appear.
We understand that some guests prefer to travel long distances in search of clearer skies, and that is a different type of experience.
Our Basecamp is for people who want to enjoy the Arctic night itself.
The peaceful forest, the open fire, the dark sky and the feeling of being away from everyday life are all part of what makes an evening in Lapland special.
And when the Northern Lights do appear, you can enjoy them from our beautiful lakeside location.
What to Expect During Your Visit
We meet at our designated pickup point in Levi and take you to our Northern Lights Basecamp beside Lake Munajärvi.
Once we arrive, you can settle into our traditional-style teepee, warm up beside the open fire and enjoy a hot drink.
Throughout the evening, you can step outside to admire the sky, take photographs and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Our guides are happy to share their knowledge of Lapland and help you make the most of your experience.
After approximately two hours at our Basecamp, we return to Levi.
Experience Lapland With Respect for Nature
At Arctic Verge, we want to share the beauty of Lapland without losing the things that make it special.
We believe tourism can be personal, peaceful and respectful towards both nature and local communities.
Our Northern Lights Basecamp is our way of offering something different: a comfortable Arctic evening where the experience matters just as much as the possibility of seeing the aurora.
Less driving, smaller groups and more time to simply enjoy Lapland.
